Milankovitch and sub-Milankovitch forcing of the Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) Terres Noires Formation (SE France) and global implications

ABSTRACT High‐resolution analysis (2277 samples) of magnetic susceptibility (MS) was performed on ∼700‐m‐thick Early–Middle Oxfordian marine marls of the Terres Noires Formation, SE France. MS variations within these sediments record sub‐Milankovitch to Milankovitch frequencies with long‐term eccentricity (405 kyr and ∼2 Myr) being the most prominent. The 405 kyr cycle was used as a high‐resolution geochronometer for astronomical calibration of this poorly constrained interval of Late Jurassic time. A magmatic failed rift beneath the Gongola arm of the upper Benue trough, Nigeria?

Abstract A magnetic anomaly map of the Gongola arm of the upper Benue trough was compiled from existing half-degree sheets of the upper Benue trough. The map is dominated by an elongated NE–SW magnetic low anomaly that stretches over a 100 km distance and has an average width of about 20 km. A combination of Werner deconvolution and forward modeling techniques on selected profiles across the major NE–SW anomaly lead to the conclusion that the anomaly may be caused by predominantly mafic rocks at depths of between 6 and 10 km, well below the base of the sediments, which are generally not more than 4.5 km thick. This article presents the realization of a device for magnetic surveys It is a flexible, user-reprogramable, lightweight, and compact tool that can be easily integrated with aerial and marine drones. The device can accurately measure the local magnetic anomalies. It is based on the Atmega 2560 microcontroller and a digital 3-axis fluxgate magnetometer.

Magnetic imaging of a late Bronze Age tumulus in France before and during excavation

Geophysical surveying is taking place in the Chatillon-sur-Seine area in France to examine and map prehistoric settlements and the structure of tumuli (grave-mounds which originally reached a height of up to 5 m but which are now almost level). The magnetic survey discussed here was conducted to detect archaeological structures within a late La Tene (100-50 bce) necropolis, in particular the preexcavation recording of a late Bronze Age round barrow. Mise en évidence de corps d'origine cosmique probable au sein de la formation de Carnot (République Centrafricaine)

Resume Deux etudes realisees independamment l'une de l'autre, ont permis de mettre en evidence, au sein de la Formation de Carnot, formation fluviatile mesozoique, d'une part des spherules magnetiques recuperees dans les residus d'un forage (zone de Boyali), d'autre part une anomalie magnetique tres localisee (sur 270 metres de long) traduisant la presence d'un corps decametrique a forte magnetisation remanente (zone de Gambondo). Ces deux elements magnetiques ont une origine cosmique probable. Ils correspondent a des micrometeorites et a une meteorite ayant atteint l'ouest de la Republique Centrafricaine entre l'Albien et le Maastrichtien.

Geophysical investigations along the Tyrrhenian shore of Calabria

The Tyrrhenian Sea is a widely investigated basin developed in the Mediterranean area within the frame of Europe- Africa convergence and Ionian plate subduction process (Faccenna et al., 2014; Orecchio et al., 2014 and references therein). Since the Late Miocene, extension within the Tyrrhenian Sea was associated with coeval shortening in the Apennines-Maghrebide orogen and progressive southeastward rollback of the Ionian subducting plate. Abstract The study in the area surrounding the Rybnik urban agglomeration (southern Poland) was conducted to determine the influence of various emission sources on the occurrence of local magnetic anomalies observed in the forest topsoils. For this reason field measurement of volume-specific magnetic susceptibility (κ) was conducted in forest topsoil on the area of study. Geophysical investigation of Pleistocene volcanism and tectonics offshore Capo Vaticano (Calabria, southeastern Tyrrhenian Sea)

Abstract Magma upwelling forming volcanic plumbing systems in back arc settings is typically controlled by extensional tectonic structures of the upper crust. Here we investigate this process in the area between the volcanic arc of the Aeolian Islands and the Calabrian arc (SE Tyrrhenian Sea) by integrating morpho-bathymetry and reflection seismic data with the outcomes of “Inverse 3D magnetic modeling” of previously gathered aeromagnetic data.
